As part of our pre-contracts team, the Estimating Engineer will lead on structural design elements as required to assist the pre-contracts team in producing accurate and competitive tender submissions and be in a client facing role. 

This is a permanent, full time position.

What you'll be doing: 

  • Undertaking concept designs and planning projects at concept stage on a wide variety of buildings 
  • Responsibility for the production of structural engineering calculations for light gauge steel frame, associated hot rolled members and composite floor slabs 
  • Delivering excellent project work within agreed deadlines and budget 
  • Interact and cultivate relations with clients and other project members 
  • Keeping management informed of important and relevant design decisions to make sure the objectives of the company and the client are achieved 
  • Representing Sigmat at meetings with clients and suppliers
  • Create and maintain an accurate cost base for pricing budgets to tight deadlines 
  • Overview schemes for buildability produced by estimating 
  • Work with delivery team when a project is secured to provide a proper handover and procurement schedule 
  • Any other tasks commensurate with this post

What we are looking for: 

  • Experience as a structural engineer
  • Ability to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current codes of practice  
  • Experience of hot rolled steel design 
  • Estimating /Construction experience would be desirable but not essential 
  • Experience of light gauge steel design is preferred but not essential as full on the job training will be provided 
  • Broad range of engineering skills
  • Comfortable undertaking hand calculations and using spreadsheets as standard but able to demonstrate ability to use 3D modelling software.  Working knowledge of Trimble design software (Tekla Structural Designer and Tekla Tedds)
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and alongside senior engineers, pre-contracts team and the external design team to provide engineering solutions 
  • Bachelor's degree BEng /BSc or Masters degree MEng/MSc 
  • Ability to work under own initiative 
  • Strong business acumen
  • Relationship building skills
  • Must be articulate and comfortable dealing with people at all levels 
  • Full UK driving licence
