Oct 2022 | Meet Pete

20/10/2022

This month we caught up with one of our long-standing Structural Detailers, Pete Shaw. Pete joined the Sigmat team in 2015 as a Structural Detailer and was promoted in 2020 to Senior Structural Detailer.

Tell us a bit about your background before joining Sigmat. Before joining Sigmat, I worked for a small family run business in the Storage industry for 10 years. I moved to Sigmat to work on larger projects, I like the thought of leaving my mark on the country somewhere!

What training and development have you had? Sigmat holds many in-house meetings to advise us on new developments within Tekla, this is key to developing in my role as the technology becomes more efficient and streamlined it allows us to ensure that we are detailing within a level of accuracy that previously wasn't as achievable. I've been fortunate to attend many site visits and factory visits which help give a real view of how all departments within Sigmat collaborate and fit together to deliver the finished building.

How would you describe Sigmat’s culture? Sigmat has a friendly atmosphere. It is rewarding to work for a business that looks to progress and promote staff from within.

What do you like about Sigmat? I like the variety of projects that we are involved with. The company has a “continuous improvement” spirit so things can evolve quickly. We have a large detailing office so lots of experienced colleagues with different backgrounds. The nature of the role means we work to tight, but achievable deadlines and this helps to keep you focused on the task at hand. There is such great job satisfaction to see your projects on site when completed!

What’s the best part of working for Sigmat? It’s a flexible company to work for which is important in the modern world. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities for people to grow, learn and develop with Sigmat.

What has been your favourite project to date?
My favourite completed project to date has been Hershel Street in Slough. That was a large footprint and a complex build. It had its challenges but the project was a success.

What would you say to a prospective candidate? Great opportunities for people who wish to progress in their career.

How do you like to spend your spare time? Spare time spent with family, eating out and watching football (Aston Villa).
